Rigger & Banksman

Introduction

This handout is designed to assist you during the course and as a reference source when at work. You may find it useful as a point of reference or for specific circumstances during your employment as a Rigger, Banksman or Slinger. By using your knowledge and constantly applying it in the workplace, you will find your own aptitude for these tasks continually developing.

Competence

All personnel using mechanical handling lifting equipment must be trained; they must also have a working knowledge of its capabilities and the potential defects that may arise whilst in service. This knowledge will be of the utmost importance when carrying out the pre-use inspection.

Correct Use

The equipment should be used only for the specific purpose for which it is designed and should not be adapted for any other purpose.

Safety

The professional operator recognizes his responsibility
for his own safety, and also for the safety of those around him.

Costs
Apart from the obvious cost of injury, and the cost of
damage to other equipment, it can all be avoided by
applying your knowledge and skills to the task of lifting
operations.
Satisfaction
A professional operator / rigger will take pride in doing
any job and also doing it well.
Avoiding Accidents

Far too many accidents occur in the lifting and moving of equipment, but these can be avoided by operators recognising the dangers and by using their knowledge and skills to eliminate or minimize the risk.
